Australia will host one of the world’s most significant gatherings of biblical scholars next year, as the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) brings its 2026 International Meeting to Adelaide in July.
Australia will host one of the world’s most significant gatherings of biblical scholars next year, as the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) brings its 2026 International Meeting to Adelaide in July. As the peak global body for biblical studies, SBL brings together academics, ministry practitioners, and students from across the world to explore Scripture, history, theology, and the lived experience of faith communities.
The call for papers is now open, with proposals invited until 15 January 2026. This is a rare opportunity for Australian voices to contribute to international conversations in biblical scholarship. It would be wonderful to see strong participation from across the Uniting Church: ministers, lay leaders, academics, and students who are engaged in teaching, exploring Scripture, or reflecting on the Church’s mission today.
While the International Meeting places a strong emphasis on biblical studies, it also offers a wide range of program units. Those whose interests lean more toward church history, theology, or interdisciplinary work will find dedicated streams that welcome and encourage proposals from diverse perspectives.
Whether you are developing new research, refining long-standing areas of interest, or exploring how Scripture intersects with ministry and social engagement, this is an excellent platform to share your work with a global audience.
Further information, including submission guidelines, program unit descriptions, and registration details, is available through the Society of Biblical Literature’s website under the International Meeting section here.
Paper proposals close 15 January 2026.
All interested Uniting Church members should consider submitting a proposal and taking part in this significant international gathering.
